Paul Kaufer wins August Streak for the Cash prize![]() Kaufer went 91-41(.689) during the month of August. Paul Kaufer from Colorado Springs, Colo., won the $2,500 monthly grand prize in Streak for the Cash. He recorded 91 victories in August, sealing the win by going 4-0 on the final day of the month. The high school math teacher employed a slightly different strategy from former winners. While Kaufer tried to make as many picks as possible, he also spent a half-hour each night before bed researching all the matchups for the following day. He also kept a small piece of paper with him during the day as a reminder of when to make picks throughout the busy school day. "My goal was just to stay within the top five," Kaufer said. "The thought of actually winning the monthly prize didn't occur to me until the last day." When it came to deciding which side to take in the matchups, he did a few minutes of research but ultimately went with his gut instinct. However, for a few days near the end of the month, Kaufer made the mistake of ignoring his gut and relying too much on research, losing five of 11 games on Aug. 28 and Aug. 29. Thankfully, he recovered from that drought by reverting to his previous picking strategy, and he won eight of the final nine matchups of the month to claim the prize. When closing in on the victory, Kaufer reacted as many do in his situation: He became extremely nervous. "I was very nervous; you can just ask my wife. I never actually thought I was going to win the monthly prize," he said. "I took my phone everywhere and checked updates around the clock."
Like many other users who play Streak for the Cash, Kaufer was surprised to learn so much about the variety of sports on the board. "Streak is such a great game, it really allows people to learn about all sports and cheer or watch events that previously they would never have done," said Kaufer, an Oregon State alum, Colorado Rockies fan and an avid golfer. His favorite sport to watch is NFL football, especially the Denver Broncos, and he also likes to play fantasy football. "My Dad and I co-manage a fantasy football team together and it has allowed us to become much closer and deepen out relationship," Kaufer said. Some of his prize money is going to a good cause as he and his wife decided to give $500 to an orphanage in Bolivia where he did a mission trip two years ago. Kaufer would also like to say "thank you" to the people who sent him messages of encouragement and support. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
